The term ‘Family Portrait Painting’ can also describe the actual painted portrait. Portraitists create their work by commission, for public and private persons, or are inspired by admiration or affection for the subject. Portraits are often important state and family records, as well as remembrances.
Historically, portrait paintings have primarily memorialized the rich and powerful. Over time, however, it became more common for middle-class patrons to commission portraits of their families and colleagues. Today, the portrait painting is still commissioned by governments, corporations, groups, clubs, and individuals. Here we have compiled an awesome list of Famous Family Portrait Paintings.
Princess Alice and family posthumous portrait
This is an interesting family portrait because Princess Alice had four daughters and one son who survived childhood; the painting shows two. The girl closest to Alice is probably her oldest daughter Victoria, now a teenager. The little girl may be Princess Irene. The other girls are Grand Duchess Ella and Tsaritsa Alexandra.

La famille Léonard
This family portrait, painted in 1692 by the great Hyacinthe Rigaud really caught my eye just now. I don’t think that any other portrait painter of this era has so ably captured the extreme luxe and dissolute decadence of the final years of Louis XIV’s reign.
